ABSTRACT

Used lubricating oils are considered as a source of contamination if a proper disposition is not applied reason why its recovery represents an important role in the preservation of the environment. In this investigation the study of a treatment method of used lubricating oils, using wasted clays of a polyol production process was carried out, and then, the clay and lubricating oils samples were characterized, according to COVENIN and ASTM standards for petroleum derivatives characterization. Results showed that the used oil components are oxidized and degraded, as well as the presence of metals due to wear of mechanical parts. This treatment was able to remove lower molecular weight compounds from the used oil. In addition, it allowed the adjustment of physicochemical parameters of the lubricating oil after the recovery with clay. The clay high alkalinity increases the metallic content in the regenerated samples.
