ABSTRACT

Motivated to the intestinal parasites (PI) importance, that affect the animal health, and some for being zoonotic to the public health, an investigation was developed with the purpose of determining the prevalence of PI in canines in the Parish Cristo de Aranza, Maracaibo Municipality, Zulia State, Venezuela. A simple random sampling was performed on 306 canines, divided proportionally in the 27 sectors belonging to the studied area. For the detection of PI, Willis’ coprological method was used, and the parasites were identify through of eggs or cysts morphology. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and epidemiological formulas. The general prevalence (PG) of the PI was 53.59%, the specific prevalence (PE) of helminths was: Ancylostoma spp. 34.97%, Toxocara canis 19.61%, Toxascaris leonina 1.63%, Trichuris vulpis 2.29%, Strongyloides stercoralis 1.63%, Dipylidium caninum 2.29%, Taenia spp. 0.33%; and protozoa: Cystoisospora spp. 14.71% and Giardia spp 1.63%. Monoparasitosis was observed in 33.33% of the cases, the biparasitism in 16.34%, triparasitism in 2.61% and the tetraparasitism in 1.31%, of the PG. It is concluded a high prevalence of PI in canines of Cristo de Aranza Parish of Maracaibo Municipality, Zulia State, Venezuela, including zoonotic species with the risk to the public health.
