Abstract

Calcareous algae form very stable groups, and constitutes the substrate to polychaete
tube building as Potamilla sp. and other sessile organisms, and trap sediment and organic material such as nitrogen. It has been determined that the epiphytic organisms associated with an algae influence it, and this in turn determines the type of organism that can live associated with it. Localities A, B, C were sampled in the Morrocoy National Park; in each one, an area of 20 x 20 m was demarcated, where a minimum of 10 blocks (1 m 2 ) were sampled monthly, selected by means of a table of random numbers, for a total of 140 blocks / location . In each one, emphasis was placed on the biomass of the calcareous algae Halimeda opuntia (Chlorophyta, Bryopsidales), the abundance of the polychaete tube building Potamilla sp. and nitrogen content in sediment adjacent to H. opuntia in Thalassia testudinum meadows. The abundance of Potamilla sp. varied between A, B and C; it is influenced by the nitrogen content in the sediment and the biomass of H. opuntia, both parameters presented a stepped gradient in the direction A > B > C. The influence of the algae was particularly noticeable in abundance of Potamilla sp, biomas of Halimeda opuntia and nitrogen content. The statistically significant relationship between the abundance of Potamilla sp, the biomass of H. opuntia and the nitrogen content in the sediment were statistically significant. These results are supported by a multiple regression analysis (r: 0.6549 p < 0.01).
