Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the mortality due to systemic mycoses in Venezuela from 1996 to 2013. We evaluated the mortality recorded in the series B20.4 to B20.6 of the International Classification of Diseases (10threvision - CIE- 10). There were 2,764 deaths due to systemic mycosis associated with HIV. The first cause of death was Pneumocystisjirovecii pneumonia(n = 1846 cases). The second cause of death was B20.5 HIV disease, other mycoses (n = 495) and the third cause was B20.4 HIV disease, Candidiasis (n = 423). The highest incidence occurred in 2010 with 184 deaths. The mortality recorded was more frequent in men (n = 2,174 cases). The sub period 2005-2013 showed the higher mortality with 1,524 cases. The average mortality rate per year was 0.55 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants from 1996 to 2013. Exceptionally, the years 2000 and 2010, recorded the highest annual mortality rate (0.80 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants). P. jirovecii pneumonia was widely superior in newborns and infants.
