AbstractOil exploitation and the misuse of fossil fuels have contributed to the environmental crisis. Thus, the need arises to seek alternative energy sources that permit partial or total replacementof petroleum derivatives with products that are less polluting. One alternative is the production of biodiesel, a fuel composed of long-chain mono alkyl esters derived from plant or animal lipids. The aim of this study was to determine some properties of a biodiesel obtained from castor (Ricinus communis), both as a fuel and as an ester. To produce this biodiesel on a laboratory scale, eight treatments were designed with varying concentrations of catalyst(NaOH: 0.6% and 1.0%), alcohol concentrations (CH3CH2OH: 30% and 40%) and settling times (24 hours and a week). The procedure included the following stages: preparation of ethoxide, transesterification reaction, phase separation corresponding to biodiesel and glycerol, and the washing and drying of biodiesel. The most appropriate conditions were obtained using 0.6% NaOH, 40% CH3CH2OH and decanting for a week, which yielded a biodiesel fuel whose properties were viscosity (14.91 cSt), flash point (173°C), flash point (190°C), API gravity (23.5°API)and density (0.9035 g/cm3); and as an ester, acid value (0.77 mg KOH/g) and saponification value (184.6 mg KOH/g). After the second extraction with washing, biodiesel obtained from R. communis met most of the specifications stipulated in international biofuel standards.  ER -
